I have listed the colonies I have for sale. The stock is updated 3-4 times per year. For housing please visit our online shop.
Acromyrmex octospinosis, micro colony

Acromyrmex are ideal Leaf Cutting Ants for personal study or small scale public display. They will reach a maximum population of around 50000 individuals and will grow up to 3 fungus gardens the size of a rugby ball.
Supplied with Queen, small fungus garden, up to 20 ants, brood visible, approx 4-5 months from nuptial flight.
Acromyrmex colonies at this size are a challenge. We recommend that, if you are not very experienced in looking after Leaf Cutting Ants, you do not buy this size of colony, small factors and variations in your parameters can result in rapid and irreversible decline

Acromyrmex octospinosis,
medium colony
Acromyrmex are ideal Leaf Cutting Ants for personal study or small scale public display. They will reach a maximum population of around 50000 individuals and will grow up to 3 fungus gardens the size of a rugby ball.
Supplied with Queen, fungus garden around the size of an apple, up to 500 ants, brood visible, approx 11-12 months from nuptial flight.
This size of Acromyrmex is well on its way. The fungus garden will expand very quickly and you will find that the ants will show activity all of the time. They are over the danger time for most cases of loss and in this regard it is worth considering buying at this size.

Acromyrmex octospinosis,
large colony
Acromyrmex are ideal Leaf Cutting Ants for personal study or small scale public display. They will reach a maximum population of around 50000 individuals and will grow up to 3 fungus gardens the size of a rugby ball.
Supplied with Queen, fungus garden around the size of a large orange, up to 1000 ants, brood visible, approx 12-15 months from nuptial flight.
In practical terms this is the largest Acromyrmex colony size we can import. There will be masses of ants and a great deal of foraging activity. In a public display setting this size of colony will make a good medium sized display and we have supplied this size of Leaf Cutting Ant colony, of this species, to several establishments. Because the smaller colonies will reach this size a few months after buying a smaller size there are only a few instances where we would recommend buying this size.

Atta cephalotes, micro colony Supplied with Queen, small fungus garden, up to 20 ants, brood visible, approx 4-5 months from nuptial flight.
Select this size if you want the challenge of raising a colony from almost scratch.
+ve's: Satisfaction Guaranteed when your colony establishes itself and you can remember how small it was when you started.
-ve's: For experts only. The loss rate is very high, conditions need to be perfect or the fungus will die, possibly overnight.
Possible option as a backup colony in reserve to a public display colony in situations where the keeper has a lot of experience and time. Recommend checks on fungus 3-4 times daily.

Atta cephalotes, small colony Supplied with Queen, fungus garden around the size of a golf ball, up to 100 ants, brood visible, approx 6-8 months from nuptial flight.
This size is ideal in situations where a public display wishes to start with a small scale exhibit and see it grow over time. There will be little, if any, foraging activity beyond the immediate locale of the nest area, certainly no walkway activity, for around 4-5 months.
+ve's: Colony has progressed beyond the critical care level, feeding placed around the entrance, supplied feeding well and easy to monitor.
-ve's: Long term solution for public display, long periods where entrance is sealed and no activity, customers experience frustration at the start.
Buy this size if you are keeping them for personal study or if you get them at the start of a close season and they have several months to establish before being seen by the public.

Atta cephalotes, medium colony Supplied with Queen, fungus garden around the size of an apple, up to 500 ants, brood visible, approx 11-12 months from nuptial flight.
A good size for starting with smaller scale displays. There will be some foraging activity, odd ants will travel from nest to feeding area. When food is introduced there will be up to 50 ants foraging for a time. There will be periods of inactivity where the nest is sealed over and no feeding is being done but these colonies are around 3 months from exhibiting reasonable activity on the foraging walkway.
+ve's: Lots of ants when first fed, ants visible on the surface at most times. Excavation activity starting in earnest resulting in several entrances to nest and ants carrying substrate to the surface. The start of an interesting display. Well over the danger period for quick losses. The ideal starter size for inexperienced keepers.
-ve's: Not a 'hit them where it hurts' display. Again, some frustration during the first few months whilst things get started.
This is a good, low budget solution to occupy an enclosure and indicate what is happening within. A good display to recommend visitors return in a few months to see whats going on.

Atta cephalotes, large colony Supplied with Queen, fungus garden around the size of a large orange, up to 1000 ants, brood visible, approx 12-15 months from nuptial flight.
This colony is our starting point for large public displays. From Day 1 there will be a lot of activity around the nest entrance. There will be excavation and foragaing activity and your visitors will see a colony going about its normal functions. After a few days the ants will establish a feeding column to a nearby feeding table but there will not be enough ants for a heavy foraging line and full display potential will not be reached for up to 6 months.
+ve's: Low chance of colony decline. Sufficient ants for public display with nearby feeding table. Soldiers will be seen and production of new workers will increase colony size rapidly.
-ve's: Starter public display colony means that client can become frustrated that the foraging line is not busier. Leaf Cutting Ants expand in steps, not gradually. When the colony arrives it will take up to 4-6 weeks for any growth to start but when new ants appear the expansion of this size of colony is very rapid.
If you are planning a large scale display then this is our entry point colony. It is established but is not a full size display colony and will take up to 6 months to reach full potential but will form an acceptable display whilst this time is passing.
 £325.00 In Stock
Atta cephalotes, xlarge colony Supplied with Queen, fungus garden variable (fungus garden may shrink in transit but will have been the size of a football when collected. The ants restore this size quickly in captivity), around 3000-5000 ants, considerable brood visible, over 12-18  months since nuptial flight.
This size of colony is suitable for most public display circumstances. Plenty of ants for foraging and excavating. This colony will display foraging activity from the first few days once the damage of being moved is repaired. A feeding table some distance from the nest will attract a steady line of ants. You will feel you have a functioning display from the start.
+ve's: A good display size colony with few problems associated with their establishment and ongoing maintenance.
-ve's: Only in cases where there is an opening day or an important event upcoming will this display not be enough of a size of colony. No real negatives for this size.

Atta cephalotes, display colony  Supplied with Queen, fungus, many thoudands of ants of all castes, large quantities of brood visible (many thousands), mature colony.
Immediate and impressive foraging, ants will locate and exploit food source up to 50m away given time to repair damage to nest. Budget permitting, this is the best solution for a display that needs to be all singing all dancing frm the start.
+ve's: Positive feedback from visitors from day 1. Colony will live up to the hype immediately.
-ve's: Colonies of this size are imperious and formidable. They are equipped with substantial majors (soldiers) and are capable of inflicting much suffering to inexperienced keepers. We offer full support and ongoing advice for all sizes of colony but this many ants are self maintaining and require little input.
When we are commissioned to set up a display that needs to be amazing and a draw from day 1 we recommend this size.
